The Balcom family of Allendale, Michigan is documented by the original letters and transcription of letters supplied by family member and donor, Gary Balcom. The Balcom family correspondents include Justus Balcom, Sarah Stevens Chapel Avery, William M. Avery, A. Avery and William R. Allen. In addition, the collection includes a letter from George W. Woodward, an officer from the 21st Michigan Infantry, who wrote a letter of condolence to Johnson and Oriza Balcom after the death their son Justus in 1863. The letters date 1850 to 1907. Three of them date from the Civil War era. The collection also includes receipts from Johnson Balcom dating 1827, 1847, and 1857.
